Auckland, New Zealand

PRE - BACKROADS OF THE COROMANDEL (AK)

Enjoy an up-close, personal view of the Coromandel Peninsula in a small group of no more than six guests, which affords the opportunity to maximize your time and understanding of its immense natural wonders.

DAY 1

After flying into Auckland, you will transfer in a private vehicle through the city and on to the Hotel Britomart (or a similar hotel), where you will spend the evening. The remainder of the day will be at your leisure with meals on your own, giving you time to settle in and relax.

DAY 2

Following breakfast at the hotel and check out, you will transfer to the waterfront and take the ferry across the Hauraki Gulf to Coromandel, a town on the North Island’s wild Coromandel Peninsula. Along the way, you will pass the lush islands of Rangitoto and Waiheke.

Upon arriving in Coromandel, a local guide with advanced degrees in ecology will join your group. A lunch of seafood, a specialty in this area, will follow.

Over the next several hours, the guide will show you the Coromandel Peninsula’s inspirational natural beauty with an emphasis on the vast biodiversity and conservation efforts to keep the area pristine. A heavily forested mountain range runs through the heart of the peninsula, an ideal setting for the indigenous flora and fauna. One of the highlights is the kauri tree, which can live to be well over a thousand years old.

Following this immersion into the natural world, it will be mid-afternoon, time to check into your accommodations at a lovely Bed & Breakfast. The remainder of the day will be at your leisure with meals on your own.

DAY 3

After a leisurely breakfast, you will transfer to a former gold mining town, where you will gain an understanding of how gold was extracted during the booms in 1860s and in the early 20th century. The streams were panned for gold dust until methods for underground mining were later developed.

While there is no telling what kinds of flora and fauna that you will encounter, you will explore a cave illuminated by glow worms. The glow worms are actually the larval stage of a primitive fly that uses its bioluminescence to snare prey. It is quite the experience to look up into a sea of glowing worms hanging from the roof of the cave.

Later, while driving along the coast, you will pass seemingly endless beaches and sheltered coves. If the tidal conditions permit, you will pause at Hot Water Beach, which is named for the hot water that naturally bubbles up through the golden sand at certain times of the day.

The guide will enhance your understanding of the Coromandel’s natural treasures by showing a collection of artifacts that may include gold specimens, crystals, petrified wood and resin.

The remainder of the day will be at your leisure with dinner on your own. Be sure to head outside the Bed & Breakfast after dark to observe the night sky and perhaps watch the South Cross constellation appear.

DAY 4

After breakfast, you will explore the southern Coromandel Peninsula, an area rich in gold mines. While stopping at one of the active mines, you will see how gold is now extracted to obtain the greatest amount of the mineral with the least environmental impact.

You will also have the opportunity to look for wildlife along one of the beaches and get a glimpse into the surf culture that thrives on the peninsula. In time, you will transfer back to Auckland to board the cruise ship.

PRE - AUCKLAND OUTSKIRTS AND WILD WAIHEKE - 2023

Discover the joys of rural life in the gorgeous countryside on the outskirts of Auckland and on idyllic Waiheke Island by visiting a farm and vineyard and meeting with artisans who find the setting inspirational.

Note: Due to varying terrain, this program is not suited for guests with walking difficulties or those who utilize a wheelchair or scooter.

DAY 1

On arrival in Auckland, you will be met and transferred to your city-based hotel, where you will spend the next three evenings. Check in is 2:00pm. Although the hotel will do everything possible to have your room ready prior to that time, it cannot be guaranteed.

The remainder of the day will be at your leisure, although cocktails will be served at 5pm. It will be an excellent opportunity to meet your fellow travelers in a casual setting.

Dinner will be on your own this evening.

Your hotel is the country’s first 5 Green Star hotel with sustainability built in from the ground up. It is located at the center of a dynamic nine-block precinct of plant-lined streets, historic warehouses and the city’s best shopping and eating.

DAY 2

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will depart for the countryside on the outskirts of Auckland. The land here is some of the country’s most fertile, making it ideal for growing fruits and vegetables and raising stock.

To better understand the lifestyle, you will meet with local farmers who will introduce you to their daily lives and welcome you to their properties. As you travel from place to place, visiting a farm and stopping for a cheese tasting, your guide will pick up ingredients for your lunch at Vineyard Cottages.

Once you arrive at the venue, owner Elle Armon-Jones will lead you on a tour of the vineyard and vegetable garden. Afterwards, you will be free to relax on the verandah as lunch is prepared or you might join in the preparation.

As lunch is cooking, Elle will present a tasting of olive oil and stone-oven baked breads. The experience will add yet another dimension to your grasp of the nuances of the cuisine. A selection of local beers and wines will be thoughtfully paired with the two courses to enhance the experience.

Back in Auckland, the remainder of the day will be at your leisure with dinner on your own.

DAY 3

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will take the ferry to Waiheke Island. Along the way, the guide will provide an orientation of Hauraki Gulf, which includes such scenic highlights as Devonport, Rangitoto Island, Browns Island and the Auckland skyline.

Upon arriving at Waiheke Island, you will see the most picturesque areas from elevated viewpoints and by stopping at several attractions. While visiting two art studios, you will browse the work of well-known local artisans and learn about their crafts. Depending on which artists are in residence at the time, you may watch a Maori carver, an illustrator or a high-end artisan jeweller.

After a relaxing lunch at a bistro, you will have the opportunity to visit a local food producer for an explanation of the island’s garden-to-table philosophy. You will then return to the ferry, cruise back to Auckland and transfer to the hotel. The remainder of the day will be at your leisure, allowing you time to further relax and do whatever you please.

Day 4

Following breakfast at the hotel and check out, you will begin a scenic driving tour of Auckland’s waterfront, with a stop for photos of the harbor from Bastion Point. You will also drive through residential neighborhoods in the eastern part of the city and through Parnell Village before arriving at the pier to embark the cruise ship.

PRE - NEW ZEALAND'S NATURAL WONDERS - 2023

Experience the diversity of New Zealand’s North Island with Auckland and its spectacular harbor location as your base. In contrast to the gentile white sand beaches of the city suburbs, visit the rugged west coast of Auckland where the Tasman Sea pounds the black sand beaches. See the rare mainland Gannet colony and vineyards. Travel to the fertile countryside south of Auckland to experience the glowworm caves at Waitomo and enjoy a farm to table lunch at a private homestead.

DAY 1

Upon arrival at the Auckland Airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel where the remainder of the day is at leisure and dinner is on your own. Transfer time is approximately 45 minutes.

Check in is at 2:00pm. If you have an early arriving flight you may wish to book an extra night so that your room is available upon arrival.

Your hotel is the country’s first 5 Green Star hotel with sustainability built in from the ground up. It is located at the center of a dynamic nine-block precinct of plant-lined streets, historic warehouses and the city’s best shopping and eating.

DAY 2

After enjoying breakfast at the hotel, depart from the hotel, travelling by way of the north-western motorway, to the farming and wine-growing areas of West Auckland - Kumeu and Huapai - to Muriwai Beach on the rugged west coast. A stop is made on the cliff tops overlooking the beach. From here there is a walk of approximately 250 meters, through native plants, to the lookout.

As you will be very close to the white seabirds, you will be able to watch them nesting, feeding and flying in the updrafts offshore. Their behavior will depend on the season and time of day, but regardless of what the activity, you can expect it to be hugely entertaining, especially if they are diving for fish. There should be hundreds, if not thousands of gannets in the colony, all of them clustered about the cliffs side by side.

From Muriwai, travel through rural farming districts to a local winery for lunch and a tasting. West Auckland is the Cities original wine region that boasts a range of wineries to tantalize your taste buds.

On leaving the winery, return to Auckland city by way of the farming areas of Waitoki and Dairy Flat to join the northern motorway at Albany. Continue into the city across the Auckland Harbor Bridge and through the downtown shopping area.

Arrive back at your hotel in Auckland. Dinner is on your own.

DAY 3

Today's tour will begin with a drive through the city's central business district before departing from the city and travelling along the southern motorway past the city's southern suburbs and over the Bombay Hills. Descend into the Waikato River Valley and follow the course of the river through the fertile farmlands of the region to the coal-mining town of Huntly. Continue south past Taupiri (the mountain is sacred to the Maori people) and the town of Ngaruawahia, the seat of the Maori King.

Undertake a guided tour of the world-famous Waitomo Glow-worm Caves, a true geological phenomenon of nature. Unique to New Zealand, these tiny creatures radiate a fluorescent blue-green glow that illuminates the caves and underground streams the glow-worms call home. The largest chamber of the cave is known as the "Cathedral," an acoustically perfect auditorium that has hosted a number of renowned performing artists drawn to the area for the purity of sound it produces. As you embark on a short cruise in an open boat through the limestone formations, your guide will share information, legends, and facts about this fascinating and beautiful oddity of nature.

You will have lunch at a private homestead where your hosts have been farming for many years and love to share their lovely French provincial home and gardens with you. Lunch is a delight and all food is made on the premises, including many chutneys and sauces, from the fruit trees on the property. All meat is organic and comes from local farms.

After lunch, return through the pastoral Waikato region to Auckland. Back in Auckland and your hotel, the

remainder of the evening is at your leisure with dinner on your own.

NOTE:

•Bring comfortable walking shoes and a warm jacket for the visit to the caves.

•The Waitomo Glo worm Caves are accessible to those with reasonable mobility, with good handrails and paths

•There is no wheelchair access

DAY 4

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel. After check-out, board your coach for sightseeing, which will include a drive along the waterfront. A stop will be made at Bastion Point for views over the harbor before continuing to St Heliers Bay and through the eastern residential suburbs. Also see the Auckland Domain, the Auckland Museum (no visit), and Parnell Village.

At the end of the sightseeing tour, you will be transferred to the ship for embarkation.

PRE - A ZEST FOR NEW ZEALAND

Explore Auckland and the surrounding North Island in a small group of no more than six guests, a size that allows for an in-depth exploration of the arts, the Maori culture and New Zealand’s stunning natural beauty.

DAY 1

In consideration of the long international flight to reach New Zealand, Day One will be a relaxed introduction to Auckland. A driver will be waiting for you in the luggage claim in airport’s arrival terminal. (If necessary, special services are available for a driver to meet you inside Customs to assist with your arrival.)

Following a short transfer to the Hotel Britomart (or a similar hotel) in the central city, you will enjoy the remainder of the day at your leisure. During this time, you can settle in, rest and acclimate to the area.

DAY 2

Following a leisurely breakfast at the hotel, you will meet the guide in the lobby. A short, but scenic transfer through the city will bring you to the Auckland Art Gallery, which holds New Zealand’s finest art collection. A tour of the main galleries will be followed by an exclusive curator tour of the back catalog, during which you will see the restoration work on historical pieces and talk to the experts that maintain the collection.

You will also have free time to explore the gallery and enjoy a coffee and snack at the café. Afterwards, you will transfer to the Civic Theatre, the largest surviving atmospheric theatre in Australasia. As you will discover, atmospheric theatres were popular in the 1920s and designed and decorated to evoke a sense of being in faraway, exotic places. The Civic, as it is more commonly known, was built in 1929 as New Zealand’s first purpose-built movie theatre and features a ceiling that re-creates the Southern Hemisphere night sky.

After being guided through the warren of tunnels and backstage corridors, which will reveal the fascinating inner workings of the theatre, you will walk to Aotea Square. There, in the Terrace café that overlooks the square, you will enjoy lunch.

Later, you will transfer back to the hotel and enjoy the remainder of the day at your leisure.

DAY 3

After breakfast at the hotel, you will be treated to an in-depth exploration of New Zealand’s native flora and fauna and its indigenous Maori culture.

A Maori guide will accompany you throughout the day, beginning at the New Zealand Centre for Conservation Medicine. Located within the Auckland Zoo, this veterinary hospital treats sick and injured wildlife. The vets do everything from root canals on tigers to x-rays on longfin eels to complex surgeries on the zoo’s animals. A tour through the rest of the zoo and free time follows, during which you can expect to see many endangered species.

Continuing on to Mount Eden, the Maori guide will elaborate on the history of the Maori in this area and how it changed when Europeans arrived. The Maori name for Mount Eden is Maungawhau, which translates to “mountain of the whau tree,” a species endemic to New Zealand. As you explore the volcanic peak Mount Eden, you will see the remnants of Maori settlements and enjoy some of the best views of the city below.

After a traditional Maori lunch, you will watch an entertaining Maori cultural show at the Auckland War Memorial. Later, while browsing the memorial’s museum exhibits, you will learn about some of the most harrowing events of World War I and World War II and see unusual military artifacts.

You will then transfer to nearby Bastion Point, a picturesque reserve overlooking Auckland harbor. As you will discover, the promontory has come to symbolize the Maoris’ fight to retain their tribal land.

Back at the hotel, the remainder of the day will be at your leisure.

DAY 4

Following breakfast at the hotel and check out, you will transfer directly to the pier to embark the cruise ship.

PRE - NEW ZEALAND'S NATURAL WONDERS - 2024

Check in is at 3:00pm. If you have an early arriving flight you may wish to book an extra night so that your room is available upon arrival.

DAY 2

Meet your guide in the hotel reception, today's tour will begin with a drive through the city's central business district before departing from the city and travelling along the southern motorway past the city's southern suburbs and over the Bombay Hills.

NOTE:

• Bring comfortable walking shoes and a warm jacket for the visit to the caves.

• The Waitomo Glo worm Caves are accessible to those with reasonable mobility, with good handrails and paths

• There is no wheelchair access

A stop is made on the cliff tops overlooking the beach. From here there is a walk of approximately 250 meters, through native plants, to the Gannet lookout.

OVERLAND - THE BEST OF NEW ZEALAND - 2024

Enjoy the ultimate, small-group (up to 20 guests) tour of New Zealand by helicopter, seaplane, private yacht and kayak when not driving through gorgeous areas such as Waiheke Island and Milford Sound.

Note: due to the nature of the touring on this program, it is not recommended for guests who have limited mobility or require a wheelchair.

Special Note: Guests travelling with Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) or CPAP breathing machines should read further below for airline stipulations with regards to bringing this equipment on tour.

DAY 1 - Feburary 13, 2024

Upon disembarking in Auckland, you will meet the guide on the pier and transfer to a seaplane for the flight to Waiheke Island. Lying in Hauraki Gulf, the island is a composite of beautiful farmland, forests, beaches, vineyards and olive groves. Although Waiheke Island produces some of New Zealand’s finest wines, the wineries still prefer to keep quantities low to maintain the highest quality.

During the scenic tour of the island, you will visit an olive oil mill and a vineyard for tastings. A gourmet lunch at the spectacular Mudbrick Vineyard and Restaurant follows.

Afterwards, you the group will return to Auckland by private yacht before driving on to The Hotel Britomart, New Zealand’s first 5 Green Star-rated building. It is located within the Britomart precinct, one of Auckland’s most vibrant downtown neighborhoods.

You will have time to freshen up and relax before dinner in Kingi, the hotel’s restaurant. Named in honor of the kingfish, the restaurant is hailed for its locally sourced seafood.

After dining, you will overnight at the hotel.

DAY 2 - February 14, 2024

Following breakfast at Kingi and check out from the hotel, you will transfer to the airport for the flight to Queenstown. Upon landing, each couple will be driven to Amisfield Restaurant and Cellar Door in a private 4-wheel-drive vehicle. The highly acclaimed, award-winning restaurant only uses New Zealand ingredients sourced within a certain radius of the restaurant, so you can expect a meal that beautifully reflects the local cuisine.

Following lunch, you will continue on in your private vehicle – just the two of you and your driver. Be sure to tell the driver what sorts of places you like to tour, so the route can be customized to your interests. For instance, wine lovers might like to visit Gibbston Valley, the so-called Valley of the Vines and home to some of the region’s oldest vineyards. History buffs may prefer to see Skippers Canyon, once a center of the gold rush.

After a few hours of private sightseeing, you will check into the Matakauri Lodge for the evening. The remainder of the day will be at your leisure with dinner on your own.

DAY 3 - February 15, 2024

Following breakfast at the hotel, the group will begin the wonderfully picturesque drive to Milford Sound. Along the way, you will stop for lunch at Fiordland Lodge, whose spectacular restaurant overlooks Lake Te Anau and the Fiordland National Park beyond.

Later, you will find the road to Milford Sound to be one of the world’s finest alpine drives. You will travel through the ancient beech forests of the Fiordland National Park and stop on occasion at scenic viewpoints before descending into the Homer Tunnel and on into valleys dwarfed by towering mountain peaks. On the approach to Milford Sound, you will enjoy a superb view of Mitre Peak at the forefront of the fiord.

When famed English author Rudyard Kipling visited in the 1890s, he declared Milford Sound “the eighth wonder of the world,” and it is still stunning from every angle. You will appreciate its beauty even more while kayaking. You may see thundering waterfalls, steep-walled cliffs and abundant wildlife such as seals, dolphins and penguins.

Note: Double sea kayaks will be used. A spray jacket, life vest, spray skirt and a dry bag for clothes and cameras will be provided. The majority of the time will be spent in Deep Water Basin, and the guides will adapt the trip to the guests’ ability and fitness. No kayaking experience is required.

The thrills will continue in the air, as you will be whisked away in a helicopter for a literal bird’s-eye view of the rugged terrain that surrounds the sound. You can expect it to be an absolutely awe-inspiring flight. In time, the helicopter will land within the Humbolt Mountain Range, where you will enjoy yet another perspective of the area. You will then be offered a one-of-a-kind opportunity to drive biodegradable golf balls off the mountain and then toast the experience with a glass of champagne.

You will then return to Matakauri Lodge to spend another delightful night. Cocktails and canapés followed by dinner at the lodge will ensure a memorable evening.

DAY 4 - Feburary 16, 2024

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will transfer to the Queenstown Airport and fly to Wellington, the capital of New Zealand.

If you are participating in the World Cruise Event scheduled to take place on this day, you will travel directly to the venue. The arrival time is dependent on flight details, which aren’t known at this time. Flight times may affect your arrival time at the event.

For those not participating in the World Cruise Event, you will be treated to a sightseeing tour around Oriental Bay, Lambton Quay, past the parliament buildings and up Mount Victoria for sweeping views of the city and harbor.

In time, you will re-board the ship.

OVERLAND - GREAT BARRIER ISLAND ADVENTURE - 2024

Prepare yourself for something special! Just a short flight from mainland New Zealand lies the Great Barrier Island, a unique and lesser-known part of the country proudly protected by its small local population and those lucky enough to holiday here regularly.

Note: Note: Due to varying terrain, this program is not suited for guests with walking difficulty or those who utilize a wheelchair or scooter. There is no hospital or advanced medical facilities on great barrier Island. Guests should be in good health to participate in this tour. This program is limited to 10 guests.

DAY 1 – February 13th, 2024

Disembark the ship in Auckland. You will be met by your driver and transferred to the airport for a spectacular flight over the island-studded Hauraki Gulf to the Great Barrier. Get a bird’s eye view of the island which forms a natural buffer between the Pacific Ocean and the Hauraki Gulf.

Once on the ground a driver will be there to take you on one of Barriers many bush or beach walks. Hear unique bird life, try to find the world’s largest wetas and see an array of various plant species. Or walk the white sand beaches, home to some of New Zealand’s best surf. This virtually untouched land is home to only 700 people who all contribute to Barriers spectacular nature and way of living. Following this you will transfer to your accommodation where dinner will be served.

DAY 2 – February 14th, 2024

Enjoy an early breakfast then become “Hooked on Barrier” with a morning fishing charter in one of New Zealand’s best fishing destinations.

Great Barrier is famous for its swimming, snorkelling, surfing, diving and fishing. With expert guidance, you are likely to haul in some Snapper, Kahawhai, Tarakihi, Trevally or Kingfish as well as possibly spotting other local ocean dwellers such as dolphins and whales.

Back on the wharf, your catch will be prepared and cooked for your lunch. After lunch you will get an insight into a different way of living with a tour by a local guide. Chances are your guide might also be the school bus driver, the local fireman, surf life saver or the person that services your room – it’s that kind of place!

Geographically it is an island of two halves with a marked contrast between the ocean- facing east coast fringed with rugged cliffs and wild surf beaches and the more sheltered western side with deep harbours and white sandy beaches, perfect for swimming, snorkelling, diving and fishing.

Your guide will also fill you in on the island’s history, an eclectic mix including early Maori settlement, people drawn by the discovery of copper, gold and silver, whalers and more recently people simply wanting a retreat from the mainland madness.

When the sun goes down you will discover a whole new look to this remarkable island. This island is naturally blessed with pollution free skies and the locals have taken this further opting mainly for solar power with regulations forbidding outdoor lighting (including street lights).

Great Barrier is one of only three dark sky sanctuaries globally. The upshot of this is truly spectacular. Prepare for a late night as you glance heavenwards and you will see Southern Hemisphere gems like the Milky Way galaxy bigger and brighter than you will ever see again. Many of the locals have become astrological experts and will be on hand to point out the marvels and share the Maori legendary linked to our night sky.

DAY 3 – February 15th, 2024

It’s time to get back to reality. After breakfast head to the local art gallery that sells the sought-after Great Barrier honey and homemade products.

Fly back to the mainland of Auckland and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before flying to Napier. On arrival to Napier, tour the world-famous Art Deco City in an authentic vintage car. Few places in the world have such a broad representation of the Stripped Classical, Spanish Mission, and Art Deco styles within such a confined area, which is why the city has deservedly become known as the Art Deco Capital.

Finally, it’s time to say Bon Voyage as you re-board the ship.

POST - NEW ZEALAND'S NATURAL WONDERS - 2023

Experience the diversity of New Zealand’s North Island with Auckland and its spectacular harbor location as your base. In contrast to the gentile white sand beaches of the city suburbs, visit the rugged west coast of Auckland where the Tasman Sea pounds the black sand beaches. See the rare mainland Gannet colony and vineyards. Travel to the fertile countryside south of Auckland to experience the glowworm caves at Waitomo and enjoy a farm to table lunch at a private homestead.

DAY 1

Following disembarkation, meet your guide and set out for some city sightseeing, which will include a drive along the waterfront. A stop will be made at Bastion Point for views over the harbor before continuing to St Heliers Bay and through the eastern residential suburbs. Also see the Auckland Domain, the Auckland Museum (no visit), and Parnell Village.

Proceed to your hotel to check. Normal check in time is 2:00pm although the hotel will do everything possible to have your room ready prior to this.

The remainder of the day is at your leisure with lunch and dinner on your own.

To provide you with an authentic understanding of the local lifestyle, our journey will take us into the picturesque countryside. During our adventure, we'll make a delightful stop for a cheese-tasting experience.

As we continue our journey, we'll head to the Vineyard Cottages, where your knowledgeable guide will personally handpick the freshest ingredients from the local producers.

Upon arriving at the venue, the warm and welcoming owner, Elle Armon-Jones, will personally guide you on an enchanting tour of the vineyard and the flourishing vegetable garden. Discover the passion and care that goes into cultivating the vines and producing the freshest vegetables.

Following the tour, you'll have the option to unwind on the verandah while lunch is prepared. Our first stop will be at the magnificent Church Bay Studio, owned by the talented artist Gabriella Lewenz. Marvel at her vivid abstract oil paintings, which exhibit a captivating blend of colors and emotions, making her studio a true artistic haven. Next, we'll visit the Waiheke Community Art Gallery, a treasure trove of local and national art. Immerse yourself in the creative brilliance of New Zealand's finest artists, as the gallery showcases a diverse range of works that embody the spirit of Waiheke.

As we continue our journey along the scenic northern route, breathtaking views of the Hauraki Gulf and the distant Coromandel Peninsula will surround us. Our destination for lunch and wine tasting is the renowned Stonyridge Vineyard, a haven of relaxation nestled amidst olive groves, vibrant vineyards, and a charming South of France ambience. The menu is a celebration of fresh, seasonal produce, offering an array of delectable dishes, from platters to exquisite a la carte dining.
