Takamatsu, Japan

The largest city on the island of Shikoku, Takamatsu is fondly known as “Udon Kingdom,” thanks to its status as the unofficial udon capital of Japan. Try sanuki udon, the local variety of thick wheat flour noodles available with a variety of broths, sauces and savory accoutrements. Ritsurin Koen, one of the most beautiful gardens in Japan, is the perfect place to walk off lunch – bridges, koi ponds, islands and tearooms grace the 185-acre garden that dates to the 17th century. Takamatsu Castle Ruins and Takamatsu City Museum of Art are also top choices in the city. Easily accessible by ferry are the beautiful islands of Seto Inland Sea, such as the art haven of Naoshima.
